Canada Guide

MapleLedger is a privacy-first bookkeeping app for self-employed people who want straightforward income and expense tracking without unnecessary complexity.

Your financial data stays on your device by default. You choose if and where to export or share it.

It helps you track income, expenses, mileage, and receipts without giving up control of your financial data.

What MapleLedger does

  • Track income, expenses, mileage, and receipts in one place
  • Keep a local record you can review anytime
  • See totals and estimates without losing sight of the details

Projects

  • A project is a workspace for one business, side hustle, or income stream.
  • Use a project to keep related income, expenses, and mileage together.
  • You can set a fiscal year start month for each project.
  • Canada mode uses Canadian tax presets and Canadian date handling.

Income

  • Add payments you received from clients or customers.
  • You can record date, client name, amount, payment method, category, notes, and attachments.
  • Income records help you keep track of what you earned and when.

Expenses

  • Add business purchases and costs.
  • You can record date, payee, amount, category, payment method, notes, and attachments.
  • Expenses help you track what may be deductible or recoverable.
  • Canada mode keeps GST, HST, QST, and similar tax labels easy to review.

Mileage

Canada mode supports two common mileage approaches:

  • Mileage method: track business kilometres only.
  • Actual expense method: track business and personal driving, plus vehicle expenses.
  • Choose the method that matches how you plan to report your vehicle use.
  • Keep your logs accurate and up to date.

Reports

  • Reports help you review your business results over time.
  • You can see total income, total expenses, mileage summaries, tax summaries, and project totals.
  • Use reports as a review tool before you file or export anything important.

Exports

  • You can export your data into files you can keep or share.
  • Exports may include report spreadsheets, attachments, and ZIP packages for larger exports.
  • If your export is large, it may be split into more than one part.
  • Premium expands export and app limits, but it does not replace your own review.

Backup & Restore

  • Back up your data to protect it from device loss or reinstall.
  • You can restore a backup later if needed.
  • Backups can include projects, income, expenses, mileage, settings, receipts, and attachments.
  • Backups must match your current app mode.
  • A Canada backup should be restored in Canada mode.

Receipt Scanning

  • You can scan receipts to help create income or expense records faster.
  • The app may read merchant name, date, subtotal, total, tax lines, and payment card details if shown on the receipt.
  • Scanning is there to help, not to decide for you.
  • Take a clear photo of the full receipt.
  • Keep the receipt flat and fully visible.
  • Avoid shadows and glare.
  • Make sure the total amount is clearly shown.
  • For best results, hold your phone upright and keep the receipt upright in the frame.
  • For best results, scan one receipt at a time unless combining related receipts like an invoice and its payment slip.
  • When scanning two receipts together, place them side by side and keep both upright. Only combine related receipts, such as an invoice and its payment slip (for example, a receipt and the corresponding card slip, or a restaurant bill with its payment receipt).
  • Always review important fields before saving.
  • If the scan is unclear, correct it manually before you keep it.
  • Canada mode is tuned for Canadian tax names and date formats.

Premium, Ads, and Reward Points

  • Premium is managed through your app store account and your MapleLedger sign-in.
  • Passwords must be at least 8 characters long and include letters and numbers.
  • Premium unlocks more export and scan capacity, plus fewer interruptions. For more complex receipts, such as multiple slips or detailed line items, Premium may extract more details and help reduce manual editing. You should always review results before saving.
  • Reward points are linked to your account and do not expire.
  • Reward points are separate from Premium and from scan rewarded ads.
  • Reward points can be used for extra scans when that option is enabled and a server-confirmed point is available.

Referrals

Referrals are a simple way to share MapleLedger with someone else.

  • If someone signs up through your referral, rewards may be issued after verification.
  • The inviter can earn signup rewards for the first 20 successful referrals.
  • If the person you invited later becomes Premium for the first time, a separate one-time Premium conversion reward may apply.
  • Recent referral activity shows the last 30 days only.
  • Referral rewards are promotional and have no cash value.

Privacy

  • Your financial data stays on your device by default. You choose if and where to export or share it.
  • Account, subscription, reward, and referral data may exist server-side, but that does not include your financial data.
  • You control when you export or back up anything.

Disclaimer

  • This app is for record keeping and planning only.
  • It does not provide tax advice.
  • This app does not replace professional accounting or tax advice.
  • Tax treatment can depend on Canadian tax rules and your own situation.
  • Recoverable tax, including ITCs and ITRs, may depend on the kind of tax and the expense.
  • Mileage, expenses, and tax summaries are estimates.
  • Please verify important numbers before filing.
